This wine is named after its ancient 1 acre vineyard site located near the village of San Esteban de la Sierra. The vines were planted in 1920, taking root in the sandy, arid soils at an altitude of 980 meters. Cool nights make for exceptional balance when ripening Garnacha in this region, and this isn’t your garden variety of Garnacha. Calabrés is a rare clone of Garnacha unique to the Sierra de Gredos mountain range, south of Salamanca. Lower alcohol production and thicker skins are its claim to fame, which makes it all the more interesting at high altitudes and confronting global warming.
