This vineyard takes it name from an ancient medieval village, Breclema, which was located near the gates of what is now Ghemme on the Sesia river which descends from the alpine reaches of Alto Piemonte. The vineyard lies just above the site of the ancient village. This is the largest estate vineyard (10 hectares) and grapes from only the oldest vines go into this bottling. The 1974 Collis Breclemae was Cantalupo’s first single vineyard cuvée and more than any other is THE emblematic parcel of this estate.
This dark ruby red wine exudes captivating aromas of licorice, red fruit, freshly tilled earth, forest floor and violets. In the mouth, a tantalizing salinity runs through an elegant yet powerful blend of lush red fruit, minerals and brightly structured ripe tannins. Built to age, with air this is a thoroughly captivating and delicious wine even young and a brilliant example of what heights Nebbiolo can reach.
The wine is aged in botti, large oak casks, for two years and then in bottle for one year before release. Three years of aging is required for Ghemme DOCG.
