Produced from the rare Prieto Picudo varietal, which is indigenous to this area just outside of León. This varietal sports tight-knit bunches with elongated berries which combined with its uniquely low head-pruned vines, make for an intriguing vineyard panorama.
In this cuvée, from a single vineyard, the vines are 80-120 years old and the farming is done entirely by hand. Aged for two years in neutral barrels and 2 years in bottle before release.
The austere and serious 2014 Valdemuz comes from a 120-year-old Prieto Picudo vineyard at 900+ meters in altitude on limestone and clay soils. It fermented in oak foudres and matured in French oak barrels for two years under a veil of yeasts. It has an ultra classic profile and is already developing aromatic complexity and tertiary aromas that are subtle and complex, with hints of spices and smoke. It is balanced, and the tannins are polished, still abundant and a little dusty, giving it the rustic-elegant style of the wine. 1,754 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2016. This should continue living in bottle for a long time. 93pts-Wine Advocate
