Notes from winemaker John Lockwood.
Vineyards: Waterhorse Ridge is planted on a rocky ridge just 5 miles away from
the Pacific Ocean. A cool, coastal climate, rocky volcanic soils and exposure to
full afternoon sun combine to fully ripen the fruit. The 2-acre vineyard is farmed
entirely by hand by Jesus Velasquez. It is dry farmed, no-till, and organic.
Winemaking: The grapes were fermented 100% whole cluster in a small open
top bin, and gently foot tread once a day during a cool native yeast fermentation.
The wine aged for 6 months in a neutral 500L puncheon, The wine was bottled
unfined and lightly filtered.
Notes: My sister’s favorite wine is a spicy, earthy Loire Valley Cab Franc. A few
years back we planted a small block of Cab Franc at Waterhorse Ridge, and in
2019 we got the first TINY crop off the vineyard. I decided to honor the first fruit
off the baby vines and make a wine dedicated to her.
The 2019 Cuveé Lizzie references the Loire Valley in all the right places. It was
fermented 100% whole cluster and spent minimal time in barrel to capture the
fresh earth tones. Bright fruit is balanced by an explosion of soft, savory, umami
goodness that begs for a picnic and a good cheese board.
