Falanghina is an ancient white grape variety that is historically rooted in the
Campania region of Southern Italy where it was originally planted by Greek
settlers as early as the 7th century BC. Falanghina is a relatively new addition to
California’s viticultural landscape and is well suited to arid summers where it holds onto its natural acidity with ease. Arnot-Roberts began working with the variety in 2016 when they were introduced to a small block planted in 2011 in the Dry Creek Valley by Dick Handal, an avid proponent of the variety. They were fortunate to collect vine cuttings from his vineyard and plant a block of Falanghina at Las Cimas Vineyard overlooking the Russian River Valley.
Las Cimas sits in the hills on the western edge of the Russian River Valley. At roughly 800 ft elevation, the vineyard is planted to an impressive assortment of grape varieties on its steep sloping hillsides. The soils are sandy clay loam on fractured sandstone, dotted with quartz and schist. The vines are exposed to ample sun, with cooling breezes from the Russian River valley and from the Pacific Ocean just 15 miles to the West. The 2023 marks the first vintage
of their Falanghina to come entirely from Las Cimas.
The 2023 was stainless steel fermented with native yeast and aged for 9 months in 33% stainless steel and 66% neutral French oak barrels. Nine barrels produced. Harvest date: 10/30.
